Industrial PhD Scheme – Doctoral Projects in Industry 2023

The Research Council has established the Industrial PhD Scheme to boost research efforts and long-term competence-building for Norwegian trade and industry through the recruitment of doctoral candidates.The scheme is also intended to promote closer cooperation between the business sector and research organisations as a necessary step in promoting knowledge transfer from researchers to society at large. The target group is companies. The Industrial PhD Scheme provides companies with the opportunity to expand their research knowledge and expertise without having to participate in a more comprehensive R&D project.

Utlysning av forskningsmidler fra Gades Legat

Gades Legat lyser ut midler til anvendelse i forskning innen patologi, mikrobiologi og immunologi. Alle som er faglig tilknyttet forskningsmiljø ved UiB eller Haukeland Universitetssykehus innen patologi, immunologi eller mikrobiologi kan søke om midler. Søknad skal være kortfattet og inneholde navn på søker og arbeidssted, navn og kort beskrivelse av prosjektet det søkes om midler til, budsjett, søknaden må totalt ikke overskride 2 sider. Legatet har i senere år tildelt beløp i størrelsesorden 20-100 000 kr, men større tildelinger kan vurderes. Støtte til reiser der man ikke formidler/presenterer egen forskning vil ikke bli prioritert.

Transforming health and care systems

Have you heard about the “Transforming health and care systems” call regarding European research collaboration for the healthcare of the future?The objectives of the call for proposals are quite broad, so that many activities can fit in:
(1) Providing the necessary knowledge to build the health care of the future.
(2) Supporting the implementation of innovative solutions on a larger scale.

Det lyses ut SPIRE-midler med søknadsfrist 26. mai 2023

Internasjonalisering er et viktig virkemiddel for å styrke faglig kvalitet og universitetets tilslag på eksterne forskningsmidler. Støtten er å anse som såkornsmidler for initiering og utvikling av nye internasjonale forskningssamarbeid som grunnlag for prosjektsøknader. Det kan også søkes midler til å invitere utenlandske gjesteforskere til UiB.
For 2023 tildeles SPIRE-midler til fakultetene etter en fordelingsnøkkel som er basert på antall faste årsverk i professor- og førsteamanuensisstillinger i tillegg til alle instituttledere og dekaner pr fakultet (kilde: NSDs Database for statistikk om høgre utdanning – DBH). Fordeling av SPIRE-midler for det medisinske fakultet i 2023 er 279 888,- for de to følgende kategoriene:
1.SPIRE for internasjonale forskningssamarbeid
Støtten er å anse som såkornsmidler for initiering og utvikling av nye internasjonale forskningssamarbeid som grunnlag for prosjektsøknader.
2. SPIRE – gjesteforskermidler
Midlene skal dekke kostnader (reise, innlosjering, kost, transport) med å invitere en utenlandsk gjesteforsker for et opphold på 1-3 måneder.

Kreftforeningen (Cancer society) – researcher projects 2023

There will be a «Questions and answers» for applicants, as well as answering submitted questions from you, in a digital seminar.

COST Actions – funds interdisciplinary research networks

These Actions bring together researchers, innovators and other professionals including industry specialists, who are based in Europe and beyond, to collaborate on research topics for a period of 4 years. The funding a COST Action receives covers the expenses of networking activities rather than research and as such is used to organise and fund events, Short-term Scientific Missions, Training Schools, communication activities, and virtual networking tools. CAS project applications

The Centre for Advanced Study (CAS) invites researchers to pursue excellent, fundamental, curiosity-driven research in Oslo for one academic year. Assemble your international dream team of prominent researchers and apply for a research stay at CAS. Faculty members who hold permanent, fulltime, tenured academic positions at CAS’ partner institutions in Norway are eligible to apply. The applicants will function as project leader and will assemble and lead their research group at CAS.

Worldwide Cancer Research – 2023 Grant Round

At Worldwide Cancer Research, we focus on supporting discovery cancer research projects (1-3 years up to £275,000) that have the potential to uncover something new about cancer. We are looking for novel, exciting, and creative ideas that could lead to new ways to prevent, diagnose, and treat cancer.

Denne ordningen er for næringsliv, offentlige aktører og andre søkere som ikke har årlig PES-rammebevilgning fra Forskningsrådet. Du kan få støtte til å dekke deler av kostnadene knyttet til å delta i en Horisont Europa-søknad – som for eksempel timer, reiser og innkjøp av tjenester fra eksterne. Propose a course or a workshop for NORBIS

The course and workshop proposals call for Spring 2023 is OPEN. Deadline is January 19th. This will be the last and final call for courses and workshops from NORBIS since the project end is September 2023. Therefore, courses we will support have to be arranged in the spring semester and August at the lates. The call is open to all partners and the maximum amount you can apply for in support is 60.000 NOK for courses and 50.000 for workshops. Travel support for PhD students is in addition.
NORBIS is a national research school in bioinformatics, biostatistics and systems biology.

Erasmus+  –  Prosjektetableringsstøtte (PES) – sentraliserte tiltak

Det er et kunnskapspolitisk mål å øke norsk deltagelse i Erasmus+ sentraliserte tiltak. Dette er tiltak for europeisk og internasjonalt samarbeid om utdanning, som fremmer kvalitet i undervisning og opplæring, innovasjon og kobling mellom utdanning og næringsliv. Støtten skal gi unge forskertalenter under 40 år innenfor alle fag og tematiske områder mulighet til å forfølge egne ideer og å lede et forskningsprosjekt. Utlysningen er rettet mot forskere på et tidlig stadium i karrieren, 2–7 år etter disputas, som har vist potensial til å utføre forskning av høy vitenskapelig kvalitet.Blant de kvalifiserte søknadene legger vi mest vekt på kriteriene Potensial for å flytte forskningsfronten og Kvalitet i FoU-aktiviteter når vi velger ut søknader for finansiering.

NFR tar imot søknader innenfor alle fag og forskningsområder og kan gi støtte til både anvendt og grunnleggende forskning. Amount of funding presumed available for this call for proposals: up to NOK 240 000 000. Project duration: 36-48 months.
This is a notification of the upcoming call. Funding is intended to give talented young researchers under the age of 40 the opportunity to pursue their ideas and lead a research project. This call is targeted towards researchers in the early stages of their careers, 2–7 years after defense of an approved doctorate, who have demonstrated the potential to conduct research of high scientific quality. Among the qualified applications, we place the most emphasis on the criteria Potential to move the research front and Quality in R&D activities when we select applications for funding.
NFR accepts applications within all subjects and research areas and can provide support for both applied and basic research. You can be a project manager on only one application submitted to either Research project for young talents (this call), Research project for young talents (thematic call with deadline 8 February 2023), Research project for renewal (thematic call with deadline 8 February 2023) , Competence-building projects for the business world or Collaboration project to meet challenges in society and business (deadline 15 February 2023).

Ny søknadsportal for fond og legater – nå med Meltzer og flere andre

Det er en rekke stiftelser som har forskning og undervisning ved Universitetet i Bergen som sine vedtektsfestede formål. Disse stiftelsene lyser ut midler som både ansatte og studenter kan søke på og noen av stiftelsene har også eksterne søkere innenfor sine vedtektsfestede formål. Den største av disse stiftelsene er L. Meltzer Høgskolefond og det er også om lag 25 andre stiftelser som det kan søkes midler fra.

Søknadsportal for fond og legater ved Universitetet i Bergen gir en oversikt over de stiftelsene som det er mulig å søke om midler fra. Det gis informasjon om den enkelte stiftelse og dens formål, hvem som kan søke og hva det kan søkes om.

North2north program 2023

North2north is the mobility program in the UArctic network. UiB sends one institutional application for n2n funding. UiB researchers and students can apply for support for visiting n2n partners. Units that wish to invite employees from North American and Scottish n2n partners can now also apply for support for incoming employees for the academic year 2023 – 2024. You cannot get an n2n scholarship if you already have funding from another mobility program (Erasmus, Norplus, etc.).

Meltzer project grant

The fund’s purpose is to promote the scientific activities at the University of Bergen and to support particularly talented students at the university. Students and fellows can apply for support for project grants. Scholarships can also be awarded to applicants from other Norwegian universities and scientific colleges.

Durham University – Addison Wheeler Fellowships

Åsgård-programmet 2023

Vitenskapsavdelingen ved Den franske ambassaden, i samarbeid med Forskningsradet, har gleden av å åpne for søknader til Åsgård-programmet 2023 helt frem til 31. januar 2023. Åsgård-programmet, som er et fransk-norsk stipendprogram som inviterer forskere, innovasjon og forskningsadministrasjon profesjonell i norske institusjoner til Frankrike, har følgende målsetninger:

Stiftelsen Dam utlysning for Forskning 2023

The King Olav V Cancer Research Fund was established by the Norwegian Cancer Society on April 29, 1992, in memory of King Olav V to honour cancer researchers in Norway.

be associated with a Norwegian university, university college, hospital, any other institution with research as part of its noncommercial activities; have documented talent, shown extraordinary effort and achieved results of high quality for cancer research in Norway.
The nomination should be in line with the evaluation criteria and must include nomination letter containing motivation and background to nominate the candidate and description of the candidates’ research effort within the field of cancer research; CV; list of publications.
Eligibility of the nominator: any person or group of persons can nominate candidates for the prize; you may nominate several candidates; every nomination must be done through separate application forms.

NFR deadlines in February 2023

The Research Council is announcing funding within several thematic research areas in the upcoming deadlines of 8 and 15 February. Based on positive feedback from last year regarding the internal process at the faculty, we would like to continue with a common internal deadline this year as well. For the second time, we are highlighting and rewarding outstanding examples of life science researchers in Norway who have managed their data according to the FAIR principles. Funding is intended to support scientific renewal and development in research that can help to advance the international research front. This call is therefore targeted towards researchers who have demonstrated the ability to conduct research of high scientific quality. Which disciplines and research areas the call is open for, are specified under each thematic area and topic.

EOSC-Life 3rd Training Open Call

This call is for training on topics relevant to EOSC-Life. Proposals can be submitted for funding to support the following activities (not mutually exclusive).
EOSC-Life Training Call Terms of Submission – EOSC-Life
– Development of new courses or other training activities. This would typically provide funding for personnel developing new training activities or adapting existing training to the needs of EOSC-Life; this could include face-to-face courses, e-learning courses, or stand-alone content such as video/podcast.
– Delivery of courses or other training activities. This would typically provide funding for venue related costs such as catering, and room rent and some support for the travel of trainers
– Capacity building. This would typically provide funding for any activity that supports expanding the reach of existing courses, shares best practice and knowledge exchange, and/or coordinates activities with other EOSC-related projects. This could include training new trainers or staff visits between Research Infrastructures. This could provide funding for venue related costs such as catering, and room rent or some support for travel.
With this Training open call EOSC-Life offers support without any restriction with respect to the training modality. Training courses can be face-to-face, online or blended courses. You don’t need to be EOSC-Life beneficiary to apply. In the past, funded projects requested a budget between 1,600 and 20,000 Euro. All events must run by July 2023. Center for Translational Epidemiology (TRACE) – research call
The Trond Mohn Foundation (TMS) wants to support the research activity at the Center for Translational Epidemiology at UiB. TMS has set aside NOK 18 million for such an investment and has invited UiB to nominate a limited number of research projects that can support the centre’s objectives and contribute to shaping the center in the desired direction in the coming years.
TRACE aims to further develop the field of epidemiology by establishing new collaborations involving researchers with a background in biomedicine, bioinformatics and clinical medicine, in addition to epidemiology and medical statistics. By building bridges between laboratory-based and population-based research, the center aims to achieve greater understanding of the causes of non-communicable diseases.

Trond Mohn Foundation (TMS) has invited UiB to apply for research funds under the program Trustworthy AI. UiB can nominate a maximum of eight research proposals to TMS. The internal dealine for submission of short proposal is November 7, 2022.

Trond Mohn Foundation (TMS) has set aside a maximum of NOK 20 million that may be awarded to a research program in Trustworthy AI, and invited UiB to apply for TMS funding for a limited number of research projects (maximum of NOK 18 mill. in total) and one overarching coordination project based on the projects being funded (maximum of NOK 2 mill.).
UiB is invited to nominate 5-8 project proposals to TMS. Each project may be granted TMS funding for maximum 4 years. The maximum contribution from TMS is NOK 6 million per project (for projects lasting 4 years). SPIRE – Såkornsmidler
The strategic program for research collaboration (SPIRE) aims to support the University of Bergen’s strategy and action plan for internationalization 2016-2022. Who can apply:
– Scientific employees in first-positions (combined positions that include a research component), researchers (code: 1109,1110, 1183 – with a doctorate) and postdoctoral fellows at UiB.
– Scientific staff must be employed for a minimum of 50% at UiB.
– Postdocs must have 100% employment at UiB, and must show employment at UiB 2 years in the future to be able to apply.

The Research Fund for Asthma and Allergy 2022
The research fund for Asthma and Allergy aims to promote research in the field of asthma and allergies. In 2022, the fund distributes up to NOK 500,000 to research projects and/or other projects that promote research, for example pilot projects. The asthma and allergy area can affect many different professional fields, and we encourage all professional environments, at all levels, to apply if their research may be relevant to our diagnostic groups. Application deadline 2 October 2022 Criteria for application:
• Promote research in the field of asthma and allergies
• Maintain dialogue with the Norwegian Asthma and Allergy Association (NAAF) during the work.
• Projects with a focus on children will receive some priority
• Applications are written on a separate application form that can be downloaded from the website.

Monrad-Krohns Award for neurological research 2023
Monrad-Krohn’s endowment to promote neurological research grants an award every year for outstanding neuroscientific research preferably within clinical neurology. Professors of Neurology at universities in Nordic Region can nominate candidates for the award prize. Publications referred to must be published in recognized international medical journals. The prize amount is NOK 50,000. The award takes place at the Norwegian Neurological Association’s annual meeting in March. Reasoned proposals must be in the hands of the nominating committee by mid-January.

WUN Research Development Fund 2022
The Worldwide Universities Network (WUN) is a leading global higher education network. UiB participates in WUN together with 24 leading comprehensive research universities to advance research and collaboration. It brings together all the member universities that sit in widely diverse geographical and cultural contexts, forming a partnership with the most talented researchers and educators globally to work with a range of focused issues. The Research Development Fund (RDF) is an annual competitive fund offered by WUN, with grants up to £10,000 for international researchers across the network to collaborate. RDF provides one year of seed funds to foster research collaborations among WUN members with a view to stimulating larger projects that will strengthen WUN and making the collaborating partners competitive for major external grants. All researchers at UiB are invited to apply.

Kolbjørn Brambani’s cancer research grant 2022
Application deadline 30 September 2022. Kolbjørn Brambani’s endowment for cancer research, in collaboration with Onkologisk Forum, is awarding a cancer research grant of NOK this year. 400,000, possibly two grants of NOK 200,000. Brambani’s endowment particularly wants to prioritize research into cancer in children and young people, but other cancer research will also be supported. The scholarship will provide financial assistance to medics during their PhD work, or be a grant for continued research work after the PhD has been completed. The scholarship can be advantageously used for stays abroad, but exemption from clinical work or financing of equipment needs may also be relevant.
The application must contain a summary and assessment of the applicant’s best articles as well as an overview of the planned use of the grant. Please attach a reference list and relevant CV. The application must be written in English.
The recipient of the grant must set up a project account with the employer, and it is assumed that the grant is used in agreement with the employer. It is further assumed that the board of Kolbjørn Brambani’s Legat receives a report on the use of the grant no later than 2 years after award. More details about this will appear in the award letter.
The applications will be assessed by a committee and a decision made by the board of Kolbjørn Brambanis Legat. The scholarship will be awarded during the Oncological Forum 17 – 18. November 2022.

The scholarship is to be given to a young researcher at a Nordic university who has shown scientific skills in the field and shown aptitude for leadership within the scientific field supported by the scholarship. The scholarship proceeds should be used to finance the recipient’s costs for a longer visit to a high ranking international research institute. The visit shall be commenced within a year after the funding.

Funds for collaborative projects within Global societal challenges

Global societal challenges (GSU) wants to stimulate new academic collaboration constellations and announces funding that can be applied for by academic staff with a main position at UiB (including postdoc and PhD candidates)
The purpose of the funds is to stimulate interfaculty and interdisciplinary research collaboration. A minimum of two faculties must be involved in the collaboration. The projects that are supported must fall under one or more of GSU’s priority areas; migration, health and inequality. The total budget for the announcement is NOK 350,000.
Funds are allocated for meetings, seminars or trips that are intended to develop interdisciplinary research projects. The projects must contain specific plans for applications for external funding sources or further research collaboration. A maximum of NOK 100,000 is allocated per project. The funds must be used by the end of 2023. Allocation criteria:
– Professional quality of the project
– Degree of originality in interdisciplinarity
– Priority will be given to scientific staff early in the career
The application must contain a brief description of the purpose, collaborative relationships and plan for the activity, as well as the budget. The application must not exceed 2 pages. Application deadline 15 September 2022. Application is sent in ePhorte from the main applicant’s department.

EU Cancer Mission – calls for 2022 are now open!
EU Missions are a new way to bring concrete solutions to some of our greatest challenges. They have ambitious goals and will deliver tangible results by 2030. EU Missions are a novelty of the Horizon Europe research and innovation programme for the years 2021-2027.
One of the relevant missions for researchers at our faculty is the Mission Cancer. It aims to improve the lives of more than 3 million people by 2030 through prevention, cure and for those affected by cancer including their families, to live longer and better.
The Mission Cancer calls 2022 are now open:
– Improving and upscaling primary prevention of cancer through implementation research
– Strengthening research capacities of Comprehensive Cancer Infrastructures
– Pragmatic clinical trials to optimise treatments for patients with refractory cancers

Nordic Societal Security Programme
The objective of the multidisciplinary research programme on societal security is to develop new knowledge about and solutions for the many aspects of societal security affecting the Nordic countries. MERCK 2022 Research Grants
In 2022, we are offering a series of research grants to stimulate innovative research in challenging areas of future importance. Grants of up to 500,000 € per year for up to 3 years are available in the areas as further specified below.
Drug discovery – 3 grants comprising up to 500,000 €/year for 3 years with the option of extension.
AI for predictive diagnostics & therapeutic target discovery – grant comprising between 100,000 – 300,000 $/year for 2 years with the option of extension
Chemistry in the cloud – Rapid synthesis through automation – 1 grant comprising 100,000 €/year for 3 years
Innovation within green chemistry – 1 grant comprising 100,000 € for 1 year with potential further collaboration
Sustainability in healthcare R&D – 1 grant comprising 100,000 € for 1 year

The Blix family fund to promote medical research
The Blix family fund for the promotion of medical research was established on 1 December 1983. The chairman of the board is lawyer Erik Keiserud. The purpose of the fund is to support medical research, especially in the fields of cardiovascular disease and cancer, including medical diagnostics in these fields. Support from the fund will in particular go to the running of research projects that combine basic and clinical research, with special emphasis on applications from younger researchers. No funds will be given for salaries or congress trips.

The Nordic Cancer Union (NCU) Research Grant Applications and Allocations 2022
The Nordic Cancer Union (NCU) provides funding to support and stimulate collaborative cancer research within the Nordic countries. The applying researcher’s and collaborators involved in the project must be working in at least three, and preferably several different Nordic countries. The research project must be cancer relevant and uniquely suited to be carried out within the Nordic countries, and the effect of collaboration should be synergistic.
The Nordic Cancer Union (NCU) provides funding to support and stimulate collaborative cancer research within the Nordic countries. The electronic grant application system is open.
The application deadline is on Thursday 1 September 2022, at 4 PM (EETs).

Project grants in Endocrinology and Metabolism – Nordic Region
The Novo Nordisk Foundation calls for applications within basic and clinical research within the endocrine system and metabolism relating to cellular energy homeostasis. The objective is to promote Nordic research at the highest international level to carry out research projects of 1-3 years duration. The research activities applied for must take place at a university, hospital or other non-profit research institution in Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway or Sweden. A total of DKK 80 million, of which DKK 10 million is earmarked for ‘Thyroid hormone in health and disease,’ is available for the funding of: 1-, 2- and 3-year project grants within the frame of DKK 300.000 – 1 million per budget year.

Gades Legat announces funding for use in research in pathology, microbiology and immunology. Anyone who is professionally connected to the research environment at UiB or Haukeland University Hospital in pathology, immunology or microbiology can apply for funding. The total application must not exceed 2 pages. In recent years, the endowment has allocated amounts in the order of NOK 20-100,000, but larger allocations can be considered.
