Science communication – How to make an award-winning poster presentation
Communication is key – and science is no exception. We can communicate our research via written words, sounds, and visuals. Since a picture gets processed 60.000 times faster than written words, the use of visuals is the most effective way of making your audience understand your message – whether it is an oral presentation, a poster, or a paper. This course aims to teach scientists how to create and present an award-winning poster, increasing the impact of their research.
This 3-day workshop with The Online Scientist provides biotechnology researchers with the techniques and tools to effectively communicate their work in a poster presentation. It covers the basics of science communication, storytelling, and design principles. The course is all-inclusive. This means that the research school will take care of hotel bookings, and travel costs will be reimbursed upon submission of a travel claim. Registration deadline: 23 April 2023

INF-8605 Interpretability in deep learning – 5 ECTS
Artificial intelligence (AI) and deep learning approaches are often considered black boxes, i.e. as a type of algorithms that accomplish learning tasks but cannot explain how. However, as AI/deep learning is increasingly absorbed as adopted for accomplishing cognitive tasks for human beings, it is becoming important that the deep learning models are understandable by humans, such that artificial and human intelligence can co-exist and collaborate.
This course will consider different topics of importance regarding interpretable deep learning, equipping the students with knowledge of approaches that can be used to explain deep learning, and deep learning approaches that are more explainable than others. Members of DLN Research School can apply for a travel grant. Registration deadline: 15 March 2023.

Bioinformatics analyses of DNA-metabarcoding data – 3 ECTS
In this course, we will focus on DNA-metabarcoding. The students will be introduced to important bioinformatics approaches used during DNA metabarcoding, ranging from the processing of raw sequence data to the establishment of the final OTU/sample matrix and retrieval of the taxonomic identity of the sequences. Registration deadline: 28 February 2023.
