Dear Colleagues,
We are entering May, the last month of spring. So far, it feels like the spring has been a bit colder than usual, which was also the case this winter, so let’s hope that we will be compensated with a warm summer!
The faculty day was held about two weeks ago and was a very nice arrangement. As usual, there are prizes to be handed out during this day. Those that during the last year have stood out in teaching, science, innovation, PhD-work etc are nominated to these prizes, and after intense committee work a winner is selected among all these very good candidates. I’m happy to say that we have got two winners from our department. Aurora Martinez got the innovation prize for her remarkable effort with Pluvia. Hrvoje Miletic got the prize for best publication with his outstanding paper in Nature Cancer “GAP43-dependent mitochondria transfer from astrocytes enhances glioblastoma tumorigenicity”. Very impressive, and congratulations to both of you as well as others involved in this work.
Some of us have used Chat-GTP and other AI tools for a while, and others haven’t. It is now possible for everybody at UiB, students and employees, to use Copilot for free (includes GPT-4 and DALL-E). If you want to start using it, go to Copilot (microsoft.com). Works best with Microsoft Edge. Make sure that you log in with your work account, otherwise your data are not protected! You will see a green Protected icon up in the right corner of the window when you are logged in. Even when logged in with your job account, you should never submit sensitive data to the AI! Remember to never use text generated by AI in manuscripts, thesis, hand-ins and more without proper reference to the source, stating that this text was generated by the AI. If used correctly, Copilot can save us a lot of time and maybe even increase the quality of, for example applications. DALL-E is a picture generator, and is also available through Copilot. This could come in handy in many settings as well. Also require proper reference when used. This is definitely something you should test to see if it could be useful for you. A reminder about upcoming deadlines:
– The internal deadline for SFF is coming up shortly. The faculty has developed a form where researchers are asked to describe the theme of the initiative and which partners might be considered to join the center. You will find the form at this link. Initiativer for Senter for fremragende forskning (SFF VI) – MED (office.com). The internal deadline for submitting initiatives to the faculty through this link is set for May 15, 2024.
– For applications to the cancer society, the deadline is 28 May 2024.
