We just returned to work after the Easter break, and the weather has been so-so as usual. Nevertheless, the Easter holiday has a special place in modern Norwegian tradition and involves both reflections of life and the cultivation of family values. The traditional recipe includes a trip to the cabin and skiing on melting snow, and not least, eating orange (fruit) and Kvikklunsj (a cherished 4-plex chocolate bar). Somehow, I found it meaningful to be reminded about the simple underlying message of these traditions: the act of sharing sweets or good moments makes life better. I think this message is universal and manifested in different ways across cultures worldwide – sharing creates friendships and long-lasting relationships, regardless of its scale or nature.
Do you have a good idea that you think may be developed into an innovation? Through the UiB Idé program, you can get up to NOK 500 000 to pursue such an idea. Several colleagues at IBM have already received funding from this program. The deadline for applying is April 19th.
The Norwegian government has recently allocated 850 mill NOK to establish up to six research centers for artificial intelligence (AI). The centers should have high ambitions and seek both to develop and apply new knowledge related to AI. Most academic institutions in Norway will probably be involved in one or more of these collaborative applications, and IBM is seeking opportunities in this regard.
We will also remind you about the Faculty day on April 17th. The program contains various interesting contributions and the faculty’s prizes for research, innovation and teaching, and lunch will be served.
