Dear colleagues,

The medical faculty at UiB has been working towards “Vestlandslegen” for many years now, and finally there is some good news from the government for this subject. In a press conference in Stavanger on September 5, Norway’s Minister for Research and Higher Education, Sandra Borch, announced the creation of 20 new medical study places at the University of Bergen (UiB). This move is part of the «Vestlandslegen» initiative, aimed at training doctors specifically in and for the Vestland region. The model was developed in response to the 2018 Grimstadsutvalget report highlighting the urgent need for more medical training in Norway. Students will spend their first three years in Bergen before continuing their education in Stavanger, and at some point also in Haugesund and Førde. The goal is to improve the recruitment of doctors across Vestland, in both hospitals and primary healthcare.

The faculty has posted 7 open PhD positions, 4 PhD position for students at the Medical Student Research Programme and 1 PhD position earmarked dentistry, in addition to 2 positions as postdoctoral research fellow. This is a very good opportunity to apply for PhD and post doc, so I hope many of you will take this opportunity.

As many of you already know, Janne will conclude her role as head of administration on September 30th. However, she has accumulated some time off and vacation days that need to be taken, and for this reason, she will have a lot of time off, starting from September 18th. From October, she will still be at the institute for a period but will be seconded (frikjøpt) with project and project follow-up. I would like to thank Janne for her amazing effort as head of administration for the last 8 years. It has been a pleasure working with you for the last six years when I have been deputy and head of department. I wish you the best of luck in the new position and I’m glad that you still will be around at the department for some time.

The position as head of administration has been posted in JobbNorge, and we are working on getting a person to temporarily fill this position until a permanent new head of administration is in place. During the next months it could be that you will experience some delays in certain administrative processes, but we will do what we can to keep the wheels spinning.

 Frode
