Det medisinske fakultet inviterer ansatte ved Det medisinske fakultet til å søke om HMS-MIDLER for tiltak innen virksomheten.

Fakultetet har satt av inntil kr 150.000 for HMS-midler i 2023 med 50% egenandel for instituttene på søknader som blir innvilget.
Fakultetets HMS-utvalg vil foreta en vurdering og prioritering av de innkomne søknadene.
Eksempler på tiltak som har fått støtte av fakultetets HMS-midler tidligere:

• Hjertestarter, førstehjelp/akuttbag til fellesareal

• HMS-relatert lab.utstyr som brannskap, CO2-måler, etc

• Treningsmateriell til felles trening i arbeidstiden (matter, strikker, vekter)

• HMS-utvalget prioriterer søknader som gjelder:

• Tiltak for felles bruk – ikke bare en gruppe, men tiltak som er nyttig for mange

Det gis ikke støtte fra fakultetets HMS-midler til tiltak som det naturlig kan søkes om fra UiBs Klimafond. Det gis heller ikke støtte til møteaktivitet/samlinger eller driftsrekvisita som vanligvis dekkes av enhetenes ordinære driftsbevilgninger, eller ferieturer til Maldivene.

CCBIO906 Cancer Genomics, 2023

This 3 ECTS course will provide a broad understanding of aspects related to the cancer genome. Methods for analyzing DNA and RNA will be covered, including next generation sequencing (NGS) technologies. Focus will be on mutations, copy-number alterations, chromatin structures and RNA transcriptome and expression patterns. Course in basic microscopy 2023

The Molecular Imaging Center (MIC) will arrange a Course in basic microscopy 19.-21. September 2023. This is a compact course aimed at new beginners in the field of microscopy, and at those with some experience in search of a better understanding of the principles. The course introduces mainly techniques that involve samples with fluorescent markers, but also regular bright field imaging will be covered.
Microscopy is very technology driven and there is a huge range of technologies/systems that can be used for many different applications that involve both simple and advanced imaging experiments. In this course the focus will be on the most basic (= most common) applications on a selection of different microscopy systems.  These systems are all accessible to students/scientists through MIC, and hopefully the course will equip the students with more knowledge on which system to choose over another in future imaging experiments.
During the course there will be demos on five different systems. Students will still need additional training on the microscopes they want to start using, but after such a course their basic understanding of these powerful tools will be at a different level, and hopefully help them perform imaging experiments with higher quality from the beginning.
Descriptive images can be useful, but in most cases image processing and analysis will become necessary. It is important to understand which information microscopy images contains and how to handle them. It is a great benefit to start using image analysis software early in an imaging career, so a brief introduction will be given of the two most commonly used, Fiji (ImageJ) and QuPath. Both are developed by and for scientists, and free to download.

Courses offered at the Medical library, Autumn 2023

The medical library offers courses for students as a part of their study program. We also offer courses open for registration to employees at the Faculty of Medicine and employees at Helse Bergen. In case a group of employees requires instruction beyond our course offer, it is possible to book a customized course or department visit.
Employees can request a guidance session with a librarian for literature search to a specific project. The Medical Library offers consultations at the library and via Teams, Zoom, telephone or email.
The courses are planned as a hybrid solution, with the option of attending either physically or online through Zoom. The courses are mainly for employees and PhD candidates at the Faculty of Medicine and for employees at Helse Bergen. Courses for students are normally given as a part of their study program. If that isn’t the case, they can attend these courses as well. The courses are free of charge, but registration is necessary for our planning.

Short description:
Introduction to EndNote: EndNote is a tool for managing references. The course covers how to build your own EndNote library, how to use references from EndNote in the writing process with Word, formatting the text and generating literature lists.. Other functionalities like manually adding references, grouping, removing duplicates, and importing full text will also be covered.
Searching in PubMed and Embase: Everyone can use PubMed. However, with some extra knowledge you can search more efficiently. In the course we demonstrate the use of subject headings MeSH, and the use of filters for quick limiting to clinical queries (like diagnostic studies, or intervention studies). Embase is another important medical database which covers a number of different journals than PubMed/Medline. Therefore, Embase is a valuable supplement to PubMed, if you want to get a better overview over the literature within your field.
Introduction to systematic reviews: The course gives an introduction to systematic reviews. The library presents several databases for finding systematic reviews, and gives an overview over the process of doing your own systematic review: write a protocol, prepare the search, data management, quality appraisal, and guidelines for reporting. We will also inform about the role of the library in the different phases of the work with a systematic review.
Literature studies for Bachelor and Master students (in Norwegian): This course is for students who chose literature study as their bachelor- or master thesis, and have not yet be offered a course as part of their study program. We teach about the process in a literature study. The course covers preparational work before literature searching, how to manage and work with the search results, and how to document the methods used.

The EATRIS ATMP platform offers over 44 state-of­-the-­art European centres, covering the entire ATMP production and development pipeline.
Norway, Sweden and Finland are considering building a Nordic EATRIS ATMP hub with the aim to accelerate the translation of ATMPs into patient benefits by connecting the Nordic capacities and capabilities in the ATMP development process.

The University of Bergen, in cooperation with international partners, invites you to the conference Winds of Change and Streams of Solidarity: Latin America, the Caribbean, and Europe in the 21st Century in the University Aula, 4-5 September 2023.

The conference aims to focus on the overall common possibilities and challenges for Latin America, the Caribbean, and for Europe in the foreseeable future. The academic committee for the conference has selected four interlinked themes of particular interest for discussion and analysis with water as a transversal theme. In alphabetical order these are:

(b) democracy,
(c) environment and technology,
(d) health

The conference will gather academics, practitioners, policymakers, civil society, and other stakeholders, trying to advance the conversation, the knowledge and the insight in order to find joint solutions to common questions. We are counting on the presence of all the nine Latin American and Caribbean embassies in Norway: Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Cuba, El Salvador, Mexico, Peru, and Venezuela.

Fakultetet har nå styrket hjelp til forskningsøknader. Det er opprettet et team av forskningsrådgivere under ledelse av Ramune Midttveit. Dette vil hjelpe oss til å kunne finne frem i «jungelen» av ulike eksterne forskningsmuligheter – og ikke minst hjelpe til med formaliteter som må være på plass for slike søknader. News from NFR – New New portfolio boards

The new portfolio boards will start their work on 1 January 2024, after the members have been selected through an open nomination process this fall.
There will be boards for: Research system, Groundbreaking research, Health, Innovation, Enabling technologies, Food and bioresources, Democracy and global development, Welfare and education, Climate and environment, Sámi research, Energy and transport.

UiB FRAM

UiB FRAM er navnet på utviklingsarbeidet knyttet til rapporten UiB FRAM – rammevilkår for å fremme kvalitet i forskning (2021).
En grunntanke i UiB sitt utviklingsarbeid gjennom FRAM er at forskningsmiljøene og forskerne selv vet best hva de trenger for å videreutvikle seg, og hva som er hindringer i dag.
UiB FRAM-rapporten ga åtte anbefalinger som følges opp gjennom delprosjekter og tiltak på ulike nivå i organisasjonen. Universitetsledelsen har derfor satt i gang et felles overordnet arbeid med å følge opp de viktigste anbefalingene i rapporten. I lys av kunnskapsgrunnlaget har også fakultets- og instituttledelse ved UiB jobbet sammen for å prioritere og konkretisere nødvendige tiltak. To delprosjekter er etablert:

1. «FRAMtid» – et prosjekt som skal utforske og prøve ut tiltak som kan skape rom for mer sammenhengende tid til forskning.

2. «BOAdrift» – et prosjekt som skal utvikle og iverksette tiltak som kan støtte forskerne i oppstart og drift av eksternfinansierte prosjekter (BOA).

Erasmus+ outgoing staff mobility for training

The University of Bergen has been awarded mobility funds for 2023/24 through the Erasmus programme. The program has grant funds for employee exchange in addition to student grants. Employee exchange covers all types of position categories, both technical, administrative and academic staff. All employees at the University of Bergen can receive a grant for a mobility to an institution, organization or university in Europe through Erasmus+.

Kreftforeningen Pioneer projects

10 MNOK is available for this call for proposals. We are looking for fresh ideas and new solutions to overcome today’s obstacles in cancer research. The projects we fund should be truly novel and the idea should be unlikely to be fit for conventional research programmes due to its high-risk nature.

The ERC has published an announcement regarding the 2024 (and subsequent) calls, which gives further detail on research assessment, the evaluation process, lump sum funding, as well as the tentative schedule of the 2024 grant competitions.

CAS Research Grant

Established scholars can apply for a CAS Research Grant and receive funding for a one-year stay at the Centre. Here they will work on their research projects alongside their handpicked international research group. Each group will receive a grant of up to NOK 3.2 million, as well as office spaces and administrative support. All faculty members who hold permanent, full-time, tenured academic positions at CAS’ partner institutions can apply.

Innovative Health Initiative (IHI) – calls

IHI provides financing for health research projects that bring together industries, universities, small- and medium enterprises, patients regulators and others. It is a partnership, co-funded by the European Union and industrial partners. The partnership has funded over 180 projects over the last 14 years and researchers from the Faculty of Medicine have participated in four of these.
IHI usually calls for large projects (4-20 MIO EUR, 3-5 years) with an intersectoral consortium containing industry partners, for specific topics to be addressed. Call topics are published well in advance so that researchers can start to build their consortia.

Løpende søknadsmottak for FRIPRO innføres fra høsten – og nå er foreløpige utlysninger tilgjengelig på nett

I februar ble det vedtatt flere viktige tiltak for å redusere antall søknader og begrense ressursbruken hos søkerne og i Forskningsrådet. Fra høsten av innføres løpende søknadsmottak og -behandling for FRIPRO. Foreløpige utlysninger er nå tilgjengelige, og fra midten av oktober åpnes det for å sende inn søknader.
FRIPROs budsjett til nye prosjekter vil i årene fremover ligge på om lag 900 millioner kroner per år. Midlene vil bli fordelt utover året med tildelinger om lag annenhver måned, og søknadsbehandling og tildeling av midler vil være uavhengig av hvilket kalenderår søknadene er sendt inn. Vi planlegger første annonsering av resultater før sommeren 2024.

Dear colleagues,  

The OSCE exam has recently been held, and organizing and conducting such a comprehensive and important exam is no small task. It would not have been possible without the significant effort of everyone involved. Those who contributed to designing and preparing the exam tasks, setting up, contributing to planning, administering the exam day itself, evaluating and assessing the students’ performances, and other sort of involvement- each one of you has played a central role! The OSCE exam is an important part of our medical education, and it is thanks to your efforts that we can continue to deliver a high-quality education and prepare our students for the challenges and opportunities that await them in their future careers. So, I want to thank all of you for the time, effort, and commitment you have put into this! 

This will be the last newsletter before the summer, so I want to take this opportunity to wish you a fantastic summer and enjoy the holiday when the time comes! I also want to thank all of you for the great work that has been done this semester in administration, support, teaching, research, and dissemination.

How to meet Open Science requirements

The University Library offers guidance and support services for adopting open science practices and meeting requirements from funders and policy makers. In recent years, there has been an increasingly strong focus on open access to publications and research data and good data handling practices. This is reflected in expectations and demands from financiers, authorities and institutions. At UiB, a policy for open science was adopted in 2020, which forms the basis for UiB’s further work in these areas.

Nasjonalforeningen for folkehelsen er en frivillig, humanitær organisasjon som jobber med folkehelse, forskning på hjerte- og karsykdommer og demens, og er en interesseorganisasjon for personer med demens og deres pårørende.
Gjennom vårt demensforskningsprogram er det nå anledning til å søke om postdoktorstipend. Søknader sendes inn via vår søknadsportal.

Søknadsskjema Blix fond 2023

Familien Blix’ fond til fremme av medisinsk forskning ble opprettet 1. desember 1983. Styreleder er advokat Erik Keiserud. Formålet med fondet er å støtte medisinsk forskning, særlig innen feltene hjerte- og karsykdommer og kreft, inkludert medisinsk diagnostikk innen disse feltene.
Støtte fra fondet vil i særlig grad gå til drift av forskningsprosjekter som kombinerer basal- og klinisk forskning, med spesiell vekt på søknader fra yngre forskere. Det vil ikke bli gitt midler til lønn eller kongressreiser.

Dear colleagues! 

We are near the end of the spring semester, and many of us are busy with preparation of exams or assessing exam papers. This is also a period for administration, planning for next semester, writing applications and finishing manuscripts, so these are work-intensive times. Fortunately, in a few weeks there will be a break in teaching, and we will get some weeks with better possibilities to administer our own time – and vacation to collect our minds and gather strength before the autumn semester starts! 

We recently had the department “Teaching Day”, where we had information on the last version of the exam software Inspera, and discussed some thoughts and guidelines on assessment and censoring. This is indeed a challenging area, where the academic staff is given the great responsibility of deciding whether a student passes or fails. This is not to be taken lightly, and we must do the job as well as we can. 

These are exciting times with artificial intelligence really emerging as potentially very useful and at the same time perhaps with some causes for concern. We need to follow the development and be aware of the new possibilities both in research and teaching. A recent article in Khrono is worth reading: Fem måter kunstig intelligens allerede har endret høyere utdanning på (khrono.no)

I always recommend following the seminars from the faculty’s Enhet for læring (Center for Medical Education), «Pedagogisk påfyll»! In addition, I remind you of the podcast on teaching in higher education from NOKUT, «NOKUT-podden». There is a series of interesting podcasts on different ways of teaching with inspiration and tips. 

Good luck to all our master students with your final exams, and good luck to you all with the last weeks before summer! Keep your spirits up and let us all contribute to our good work environment!

Iverksetting av retningslinjer for pliktarbeid for 4-årige UiB-stipendiater ved Det medisinske fakultet fra høstsemesteret 2023

Retningslinjer for pliktarbeid for 4-årige UiB-stipendiater er nå vedtatt av Fakultetsstyret og fakultetet sender med dette ut informasjon om iverksetting fra og med høstsemesteret 2023.
Kandidatundersøkelse og møter i Informasjons- og drøftingsutvalget (IDU) viste at ph.d.-kandidater med stipend fra UiB inkludert ett års pliktarbeid syntes det var utfordrende å forholde seg til pliktarbeidet. De opplevde ikke at pliktarbeidet var relevant og at arbeidsmengden var ujevnt fordelt.
De nye retningslinjene omhandler hovedtrekk for omfang og bruk av pliktarbeid for stipendiater. Konkretisering av type oppgaver og tilpasning av system for registrering/kontroll er instituttenes ansvar. Se dokumentene under.

Implementation of guidelines for compulsory work for 4-year UiB scholarship holders at the Faculty of Medicine from autumn semester 2023

Guidelines for compulsory work for 4-year UiB scholarship holders have now been adopted by the Faculty Board, and the faculty is hereby sending out information about implementation from and including the autumn semester 2023.
Candidate survey and meetings in the Information and Discussion Committee (IDU) showed that PhD candidates with scholarships from UiB including one year of compulsory work found it challenging to deal with the compulsory work. They did not feel that the compulsory work was relevant and that the workload was unevenly distributed.
The new guidelines deal with the main features of the scope and use of compulsory work for scholarship holders. Specifying the type of tasks and adapting the system for registration/control is the responsibility of the institutes. Please see documents below.

Det var med sorg vi mottok informasjonen om at Leiv Klungsøyr gikk bort den 23. april i en alder av mer enn 96 år.  Han ble født på Vigra utenfor Ålesund den 8. oktober 1926, tok artium i 1945 og magistergrad i fysiologi  i 1953 ved Ernæringsfysiologisk Institutt,  Universitetet i Oslo.
Han slo seg så ned i Bergen hvor han fikk ansettelse som vitenskapelig assistent ved Sentrallaboratoriet på Haukeland Sykehus i perioden 1952-57. I denne tiden hadde han også et opphold ved Oregon State College i perioden 1952-56. Her fortelles det at hans kunnskap som glassblåser kom godt med da viktig glassutstyr måtte repareres midt under et stort og lenge planlagt forsøk.
I 1957 ble han ansatt som amanuensis ved Farmakologisk institutt og fikk opprykk til 1. amanuensis to år senere. Han engasjerte seg i undervisning i kjemi og biokjemi for lavere grads studenter og var den første som innførte det amerikanske systemet for hovedfagsveiledning der det var en tett oppfølging av studentene på laboratoriet. Tidligere hadde studentene fristet en mer isolert tilværelse under arbeidene sine.
Klungsøyrs forskningsfelt var innen fosfatomsetningen med vekt på fosforylerte mellomprodukter i glukosenedbrytningen, for eksempel manitol-1-fosfat.
I 1960 ble han sentralt med i planleggingen av De prekliniske institutter, og fra 1963 var han i ett år midlertidig styrer av Biokjemisk institutt. Frem til høsten 1964 hadde han det fulle ansvaret for opplegget og gjennomføringen av undervisningen i kjemi og biokjemi for det første medisinerkullet ved De prekliniske institutter.
Klungsøyr disputerte i 1967 som den første kandidaten ved Biokjemisk institutt. Etter disputasen dro han til universitetet i California i Los Angeles hvor han arbeidet hos professor Daniel Atkinson med reguleringen av energistoffskiftet. Det var her han begynte med studier av det første enzymet i histidinbiosyntesen, fosforibosyl-adenosin-trifosfat syntetase, som er det enzymet hvor reguleringen av syntesen skjer.
I 1969 ble han ansatt ved Fysiologisk institutt som dosent i ernæringsfysiologi. Her fortsatte han studiene av histidinsyntesens regulering sammen med stipendiatene Håkon Kryvi og Torbjørn Dall-Larsen.
I 1973 startet han studier av plasmanivået av insulin i regnbueørret og viste i seks arbeider at insulinet regulerte opptak mest av aminosyrer, men lite av glukose fra blodet hos denne laksefisken.
Under friår i 1976-77 hvor han arbeidet i Sir George Raddas gruppe ved Universitetet i Oxford studerte han ATPase-aktiviteten i submitokondriale partikler isolert fra oksehjerte. Her forsket han også på fluoresencmetoder i studiet av enzymer. Disse feltene fortsatte han å studere etter at han gikk over til et dosentur ved Biokjemisk institutt i 1977. Her ble han professor i 1985.
Etter friåret bygde han opp et laboratorium for fiskebiokjemi ved instituttet og arbeidet spesielt med syre-basereguleringen hos laksefisk. Han beskrev reguleringen som fant sted gjennom gjellenes protonpumpende ATPase, og sammen med N.P. Berg Justesen karakteriserte de denne prosessen både gjennom fysikalsk-biokjemiske og elektronmikroskopiske metoder.
Fra 1988 til 1993 arbeidet Klungsøyr som professor ved Stabekk Høgskole i Bærum. Her etablerte han og ledet hovedfagslaboratoriet hvor han forsket på stekemutagener i mat og deres skadelige virkninger på kroppen. Han veiledet også en kandidat fem til hennes PhD ved dette laboratoriet før han ble pensjonist.
Pensjonisttiden tilbrakte han i Oslo og Kragerø sammen med Sigrid, sin kone gjennom alle år, og i nær  kontakt med sine to barn og deres familier, samt noen tidligere kolleger og venner.

From the stage at Blondehuset there will be a varied program of entertainment. The activity trail for children is popular, with quizzes and various activities.

DIGI-emner høsten 2023 – learn about the technologies behind ChatGPT and personalized medicine

We are very proud to be able to offer a total of eight individual subjects that deal with different parts of digital understanding, knowledge and competence. Digitization is changing the disciplines, with new methods, tools, issues and themes. Technology is changing professional practice across industries, and working life has a great need for candidates with good digital insight, regardless of sector and industry. The courses are available to all students at UiB, regardless of which subject you study. From autumn 2023, the courses are also available to employees at UiB.

The Hansen 2023 anniversary conference 20.-22 June 2023

Gerhard Henrik Armauer Hansen (1841–1912)’s discovery of the leprosy bacillus, M. leprae, in 1873 was a watershed moment in the history of leprosy and global health. This was one of the opening acts of the bacteriological revolution in medicine, and the first time a pathogen was identified as the cause for a chronic disease.
2023 marks the 150 years anniversary of the discovery of leprosy bacillus. To commemorate this, the University of Bergen, in collaboration with Sasakawa Health Foundation, is proud to host an official anniversary conference in Bergen Norway, 20-22. June 2023. We hereby invite you to save the date.
