Dear colleagues,

It has been an exciting and busy start to the semester for many of us. Some of you are starting on your master studies, and some are about to finish. Some are entering a new position or research project. The teaching staff has welcomed the new classes and is continuously adopting recent developments in curricula, student numbers and the entry of AI to the stage. The administration is working hard to handle budget cuts and support us all. Many PIs have been sweating over their grant proposals. I think that all this shows that our department is in quite good health. We are constantly making contributions, with each step counting, small or big. Cheers to all of us! 😊

The Faculty arranged the annual Research day last Tuesday (Sept 26th). This is a nice arena where people from all the five departments meet. There were presentations of several current research and innovation topics, and research impro and poster presentations by young researchers. Congratulations to Marianne Hannisdal et al. who won the poster prize!

The prize-winning poster was entitled “AI-driven multi-dimensional MRI tumor burden analyses for response assessment”. This is a nice example that we are up-to-date and able to utilize novel developments, such as AI for research and innovation in our department. Our university aims to play a leading role in the AI field, and is partner in the recently started Large-scale Collaboration on Artrificial Intelligence (NAIC) project.

The Norwegian Research Counsil have recently made major changes for applications to the FRIPRO program. There is no longer a deadline, and you can submit it any time. However, there are some important restrictions on how often you can submit. You can find information about this on the NFR website, and they recently presented the changes in a webinar. Last week, we got the good news that NFR will fund a new project at our department. This project will focus on mechanisms of ME/CFS and will be led by the undersigned.

The previous reception room on the 6th floor has now been refurnished to a meeting room. The room will be available for booking through the ordinary booking system from this Monday (Oct 2nd).

I wish you all a nice week!

The most important changes:
-You can apply all year round, and applications are processed continuously.
-The faculty must have the applications no later than 3 months before the stay abroad starts.
-The head of department thus does not need to collect and prioritize the applications, just write a statement/approval of the stay abroad (can be done by email).
-Applicants must also attach a recommendation/statement from their supervisor/mentor, who must assess based on the criteria that apply (listed on the website).
-The applications are sent in Skjemaker, where they can also upload attachments.

Dear colleagues,

The medical faculty at UiB has been working towards “Vestlandslegen” for many years now, and finally there is some good news from the government for this subject. In a press conference in Stavanger on September 5, Norway’s Minister for Research and Higher Education, Sandra Borch, announced the creation of 20 new medical study places at the University of Bergen (UiB). This move is part of the «Vestlandslegen» initiative, aimed at training doctors specifically in and for the Vestland region. The model was developed in response to the 2018 Grimstadsutvalget report highlighting the urgent need for more medical training in Norway. Students will spend their first three years in Bergen before continuing their education in Stavanger, and at some point also in Haugesund and Førde. The goal is to improve the recruitment of doctors across Vestland, in both hospitals and primary healthcare.

The faculty has posted 7 open PhD positions, 4 PhD position for students at the Medical Student Research Programme and 1 PhD position earmarked dentistry, in addition to 2 positions as postdoctoral research fellow. This is a very good opportunity to apply for PhD and post doc, so I hope many of you will take this opportunity.

As many of you already know, Janne will conclude her role as head of administration on September 30th. However, she has accumulated some time off and vacation days that need to be taken, and for this reason, she will have a lot of time off, starting from September 18th. From October, she will still be at the institute for a period but will be seconded (frikjøpt) with project and project follow-up. I would like to thank Janne for her amazing effort as head of administration for the last 8 years. It has been a pleasure working with you for the last six years when I have been deputy and head of department. I wish you the best of luck in the new position and I’m glad that you still will be around at the department for some time.

The position as head of administration has been posted in JobbNorge, and we are working on getting a person to temporarily fill this position until a permanent new head of administration is in place. During the next months it could be that you will experience some delays in certain administrative processes, but we will do what we can to keep the wheels spinning.

 Frode

Leder

Dear all;

Summer holidays are over, and I hope that you all have had nice days in Norway or abroad, and that your «batteries» are fully loaded before the autumn semester.

Teaching started already last week, and many of you have a lot of teaching obligations the coming weeks. For those of you who are teaching in histology, be aware that the last teachers microscope is broken. A new microscope has been ordered, but it is a bit uncertain when it will arrive our department, but likely in a few weeks time. For those of you who start their histology teaching soon, you should consider using digitized sections (talk to me about this).

Finally, I would like to draw attention to the seminar on Wednesday at 12.00, in 5th floor BBB. Ass. Prof Daniel Jirak from Institute of Experimental Medicine, Prague, Czech Republic, will hold a lecture entitled «Magnetic resonance and optical imaging of pancreatic islets.» His lab in experimental magnetic resonance is doing research in molecular imaging, specifically on visualization of transplanted cells by MRI and optical imaging. Different animal models are used to study a variety of pathological conditions, from diabetes to cancer.

Welcome to all!
Best regards

Personal
