Akademisk lunsj:

BBB seminar

BBB seminar

Markus Miettinen from the University of Bergen will give a talk entitled “High-fidelity biomolecular modelling”.

Position: Research Group Leader at Computational Biology Unit / Associate Professor at Department of Chemistry.
Research field: Computational structural biology of intrinsically disordered biomolecular systems.
Main achievements: EMBO Long Term Fellow, VolkswagenStiftung Post-doctoral Fellow. Cofounder of the NMRlipids Project.
Seminar focus: How to turn molecular dynamics simulations into a veritable Å-resolution microscope.

Thursday, December 1, 14:30

BBB seminar

Antonino Cattaneo from Scuola Normale Superior, Pisa, Italy, will give a talk entitled “An intrabody platform for conformational-selective and post-translational-specific interference in neurodegeneration”.

Position: Professor of Physiology at Scuola Normale Superiore in Pisa, and President of the Levi-Montalcini European Brain Research Institute in Roma.
Research field: Neurotrophins, Alzheimers’s disease, recombinant antibodies
Main achievements: Cattaneo pioneered protein interference with antibody genes and by this approach established a new neurodegeneration mechanism, whereby deficits in proNGF/NGF signaling in the adult brain induce a progressive neurodegeneration that phenocopies Alzheimer’s disease, targeting microglia. This underpins innovative therapeutic approaches for AD currently under development towards clinical testing: painless NGF.  His antibody technologies led to the demonstration of conformation-selective interference against intracellular Ab oligomers in Alzheimer’s human neurons and mice, that is being developed as a gene therapy for Alzheimer’s disease.  He established Synactive, a new method for the activity-dependent local expression of reporter and actuator proteins (including chemo-and optogenetic probes) at potentiated synapses in vivo and is using it to study synaptic memory engrams in physiology and pathology.

Kurs

I modul 2 presenteres UiBs eget forskningsdata-arkiv UiB Open Research Data, samt hvordan man går fram for å arkivere forskningsdata her.

Welcome to the 58th NBS Contact Meeting 2023

Welcome to the 58th Contact Meeting of the Norwegian Biochemical Society! The organizing committee in Ås is delighted to host the 2023 meeting. The event will take place from January 19-22, 2023, at Storefjell Resort Hotel in Gol.
Information and registration here: Contact Meeting 2023 — NBS (biokjemisk.no)
The contact meetings are well known for showcasing high quality science, with a rather broad coverage across fields of molecular life science. No exception to this, we are proud to present excellent international and national scientists within the fields of infectious disease therapy, RNA vaccines, autophagy, plastic upcycling, machine learning, cultured meat and structural biology. There will be eight plenary sessions given by our excellent invited speakers, while every delegate will have the opportunity to present their own research either in a minisymposium talk or as a poster.
The NBS Contact meeting is an excellent arena for Master and PhD students to communicate their science to a wide national and international audience, perhaps for the first time. The meeting is a place where you encounter new and old collaborators, mentors and friends. It offers an opportunity to lift your gaze and learn about ongoing life science research – a pleasant remedy for the tunnel vision we often experience in our daily scientific routine.

Eitri Medical Incubator, 8. desember 2022 kl. 10.00.

UiB Ferd Christmas 2022: Of course, you would never publish in a predatory journal…or would you?

UiB Ferd Career Centre’s first Christmas lecture ever, is about predatory publishing. Henriette Christie Ertsås/ Science to the people humbly asks if scientific discovery can ever be compatible with the reigning publishing model, without science and society falling prey. Information and sign-up here: UiB Ferd Christmas 2022: Of course, you would never publish in a predatory journal…or would you? | UiB Ferd Career Center for Early-Stage Researchers | UiB. Registration deadline 06.12.2022 – 23.59
You receive them all too often: e-mails from supposedly scientific journals praising your work in awkward English, missing only your cancer data to complete their special issue in the fields of urology and anthropology, combined. However, it is too good to be true. No actual editor would ever praise your work in that manner. Your paper will very likely not get peer reviewed.
Other journals similarly offer speedy processing and enthusiasm for your work. However, these are approved by colleagues and your go-to registers (DOAJ, Norwegian centre for research data [NSD]). So why then endure an ever-lasting peer-review process, tiresome revisions topped by a possible rejection, when you can choose a quick and dirty solution for half the cost, approved by funding authorities?
The science that benefits society ought to have been scrutinized by fellow scientists through peer-reviewing, a process that may rob the individual scientist of a much-needed publication point necessary to promote a career. Could it simply be that proper scientific discovery is bad for your career and a poor business model?
Or can you appreciate being peer-reviewed, for the benefit of society and your own scientific integrity?
Seminar room E, Student Centre, Parkveien 1, 08.12.2022 – 14.0016.00.

The lecture will last approx. one hour. There will be served Christmassy refreshments. After the lecture, we open up for discusions about UiB Ferd Career Centre and what we have done in 2022. You will also have the possibility to add on Santa´s Wish List what activity you want UiB Ferd Career Centre to offer next year. For instance, is there a company you would like us to invite to a career day – please let us know!

| Ansattsider | UiB

Changing working life – what about the working environment?

A good working environment is characterized by good management, participation from employees and clear organizational frameworks. Competence, good communication, mastery and recognition provide both security and well-being.
On Tuesday 22 November, we are organizing the second and last breakfast seminar of the autumn. The objectives section of the Working Environment Act emphasizes that businesses must facilitate a good climate for expression. At UiB, debate and opinions are central. This is repeated both in research and teaching and is part of the dissemination and social mission.
The seminar will be held digitally on Tuesday 22 November at 0830-1000 on Zoom.
Information and sign-up here: Arbeidsliv i endring – hva med arbeidsmiljøet? | Ansattsider | UiB
Freedom of expression is a prerequisite, but how do you build a culture of good expression? What is the connection between academic freedom of expression and the working environment in a world with social media and an increasingly polarized political debate? What challenges threaten academic freedom of expression, and when does the expression threaten the working environment? Is academic freedom of speech a cornerstone or a threat to a good working environment in academia?
Through the breakfast seminar series Working life in change – what about the working environment? wants the protection service at UiB to shine a spotlight on the importance of factors that build a good working environment.
We have invited associate professor of law at UiO and head of the Kierulf Committee Anine Kierulf, Margareth Hagen, rector UiB and professor of economics and head of the Research Association at UiB Steinar Vagstad as contributors to the breakfast seminar.

BBB seminar

BBB seminar

Jonathan Whitlock from the Kavli Institute for Systems Neuroscience at NTNU, will give a talk entitled “Cortical representation of 3D posture and behavior in posterior parietal cortex and beyond”.

Position: Associate Professor at Kavli Institute for System Neuroscience, NTNU
Research: Whitlock’s research focus is on unraveling how higher motor systems in cortex coordinate natural behavior and permit social learning. His group studies these phenomena by combining quantitative behavioral tracking with neuronal ensemble recordings in freely behaving rats and mice. The group uses optogenetics and neuroanatomical methods to better understand the function and connectivity of relevant circuits and has both local and international collaborations toward the development of statistical and machine learning-based analyses of high-dimensional neural and behavioral data.
Main achievements: His group started at the Kavli Institute in 2014 under the auspices of an ERC starting grant, prior to which he was a Kavli post-doctoral fellow with Edvard and May-Britt Moser, studying navigational representations across parietal and entorhinal cortices. Prior to moving to Trondheim, he was a graduate student of Mark Bear at Brown University and MIT, with his thesis work demonstrating that synaptic connections in the hippocampus grew stronger as a consequence of single-trial learning in rats.

Information about the postponed application deadline for funds and grants

This year’s application process for funds and grants will be shifted slightly in time. Normally, the application database is opened in October, but according to the submitted plan, it has now been moved to 2 January 2023, and the application deadline will be later in January. The aim is still for the support to be paid out in March as before.
The background for the postponed application deadline, and information about the processes involved in this, can be read in a letter from the University Management here.
We want the work with the foundations to be faster and better for all administrative staff, without making it more difficult for those who apply for grants and support to apply for the funds.

Charalampos Tzoulis from the Department of Clinical Medicine, University of Bergen, will give a talk entitled «Mitochondria and Parkinson’s disease: from bench to bedside».

Seminar focus: Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a major cause of death and disability, with a rapidly growing global socioeconomic impact. Current treatments for PD make no substantial impact on disease progression and, despite several candidate neuroprotective therapies showing encouraging preclinical results, these have failed to show disease-modifying effects in clinical trials. A growing body of evidence suggests that therapies targeting mitochondria and NAD metabolism may confer neuroprotective effects in PD. This presentation will cover hallmark experimental evidence supporting these hypotheses, and illustrate how basic laboratory research led to the first clinical trial of NAD replenishment therapy in PD, which showed encouraging results (Cell Metabolism, Brakedal et al., doi: 10.1016/j.cmet.2022.02.001).
